About Lakeland Terriers...

    The Lakeland Terrier comes from the Lake District in England. Lakeland Terriers have been used to hunt and kill foxes to protect lambs. Lakeland Terriers have been one of the most popular working Terriers in the U.K. since the 1800s.

   Lakeland Terriers are brave and hardy. They are intelligent, alert, confident and bold.. They are a friendly breed and get along with children well with the energy to match them. Lakeland Terriers are level headed, and fun loving.

    Lakeland Terriers are a small (13-18 pound) dog of square, sturdy build with a non-shedding coat. The coat is wiry if hand stripped (hairs plucked, somewhat like doing the dog's shedding for it!), soft and curly if cut or clippered. Only if the coat is allowed to grow for 4-5 months without trimming will it eventually begin to shed. The clippered coat eventually becomes very pale in color, but hand stripping will restore the original color if you find you don't like the look of the clippered coat.

    Lakelands have wonderful personalities and are very intelligent and quick to learn. They are independent thinkers, and if you want a dog that is naturally slavishly obedient, the Lakeland is not for you. However, if you want to be entertained, if you want an ever optimistic fun-loving pal you might be right for the breed.

    A walk on a leash is not sufficient exercise, even three or four walks a day. If you do not have a fenced yard, or the dedication to make sure the dog gets real exercise every day, but you are captivated by this breed, consider purchasing an older puppy or young adult.

    The Lakeland Terrier has a dense, wiry coat with longer hair on the legs and muzzle, often giving him a distinct beard. Small and sturdy, the breed's narrow frame allows him to squeeze into rocky dens to chase after vermin. While generally a show dog or family companion today, Lakelands can also be found utilizing their natural instincts at earthdog events or digging in the backyard. The breed comes in a variety of colors including blue, black, liver, red and wheaten with or without a patch of color over the back and shoulders called a "saddle".
